Reaction from Nigeria, ECOWAS After Niger Accuses the Country of Terrorism

The Nigerian government has refuted allegations made by Niger Republic, stating they are baseless. These accusations surfaced after a viral video showed Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, claiming Nigeria was involved in sabotaging a pipeline near Dioundiou, Lido, and Karakara in Dosso region. Niger also alleged that French and British soldiers were stationed in Nigeria, establishing bases in Gigani and Gajigana.

In the video, Tchiani alleged that captured terrorists disclosed plans involving the Nigerian government, claiming a forest near Sokoto was being turned into a terrorist base. He accused Nigerian officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, of being aware of these activities. He also implicated France in collaborating with terrorist groups to destabilize the region.

The Nigerian government dismissed these claims as fabricated, emphasizing its commitment to fostering peace and regional stability. They stated that no part of Nigeria has been ceded to foreign powers for subversive operations and reaffirmed support for regional security initiatives, particularly through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

ECOWAS also rejected the allegations, highlighting Nigeria’s contributions to peace and security in West Africa. The regional bloc supported Nigeria and refuted claims of state-sponsored terrorism, reiterating its commitment to combating terrorism and maintaining stability in the region.

Meanwhile, ECOWAS announced the formal suspension of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the organization effective January 29, 2025, following military coups in those countries. This decision was reached during the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja, Nigeria.
